!Introduction

In 2019, the European Commission undertook a review of best practice in science advice, publishing a series of major reports. They included the [Joint Research Centre|https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/facts4eufuture/understanding-our-political-nature] and the [Group of Chief Scientific Advisors|https://ec.europa.eu/info/research-and-innovation/strategy/support-policy-making/scientific-support-eu-policies/group-chief-scientific-advisors/scientific-advice-european-policy-complex-world_en], together with a comprehensive evidence review by the consortium of Europe’s academies, [SAPEA|https://www.sapea.info/topics/making-sense-of-science], which was coordinated by Academia Europaea. More recently, the Advisors and the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies have issued a [joint statement on science advice|https://ec.europa.eu/info/news/joint-statement-scientific-advice-european-policy-makers-fight-against-covid-19-pandemic-2020-jun-24_en] during the coronavirus pandemic.

In this 90-minute webinar, chief science advisors, experts and staff of the European Commission will reflect on how effectively Europe is rising to the challenge and what lessons can be learned for the future. They will share practical experiences of giving science advice in the face of unprecedented complexity, uncertainty and public visibility during the outbreak; as well as how best to apply science advice frameworks and practices to secure greater resilience in the aftermath of Covid-19.
