Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University is organizing an international conference “Functions of Neuroglia” in commemoration of the prominent neuroscientist, Alexander Roitbak’s, centenary birthday.

Alexander Roitbak was a prominent neurophysiologist, and member of the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) and the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He was one of the pioneers of electrophysiological investigation of the central nervous system, as well as one of the first Soviet neuroscientists investigating the functions of neuroglia.

With support from IBRO, he organized a series of scientific meetings called “Functions of Neuroglia” in 1976, 1984 and 1989 in Tbilisi, Georgia. These crucial and unique gathering offered scientists from Eastern, Central and Western Europe, as well as USA, the platform to share the most recent knowledge in – what was at the time – a newly emerging field. Since the last meeting in 1989, neuroglia physiology has become one of the leading fields in modern neuroscience.

Among the many outstanding speakers, following members of Academia Europaea will give talks: Isidro Ferrer, Elly Hol, Helmut Kettenmann, Zaal Kokaia, Agneta Nordberg, Ole Petter Ottersen, Milos Pekny, Dmitri Rusakov, Eva Syková, Alexei Verkhratsky and Robert Zorec.
