Film, media and visual studies#
The section
Film, Media and Visual Studies covers the wide and growing range of disciplines engaged with the study of technologically mediated forms of communication. The section includes disciplinary and interdisciplinary research on these modes of communication, their shaping, sharing and storing in terms of representation as well as contexts of production and use. Whether studying analogue or digital formats, members of the section may work in the humanities, social sciences and technical sciences, since domains in the area develop across substantive and institutional boundaries. Section areas encompass, but are not limited to, media studies, inc. film, multimedia, strategic and organisational communication, journalism and public relation studies, mediated sound studies; visual studies, inc. photography and visual evidence used across discipline; creative and performing arts and design. In terms of research approach, the section covers analytical, applied, ethnographical, historical, pedagogical, practice-led, scientific, technological and theoretical approaches. The section very much encourages dialogue across established specialisms to further stimulate an already vibrant scientific area.
