PAST EVENT May 12-13, 2016#

PRESENTATION OF THE ACTIVITIES OF THE BKH-AE AT ANDORRA#

On May 12, 2016, the Academic Director of the BKH, Prof. R. Guerrero, was invited by the SAC (Societat Andorrana de Ciències, Andorran Society of Sciences) to present the activities of the BKH since the establishment of the hub, in January of 2013.

On May 12 and 13, 2016, Prof. R. Guerrero extensively discussed with the president of the SAC, Dr. Àngels Mach, and with the Rector of the University of Andorra, Prof. Miquel Nicolau, the various possible collaborations between the two Andorran institutions and the Academia Europaea Barcelona Knowledge Hub.

The SAC is a private, cultural association that carries out cultural and educational projects in the areas of knowledge, research and higher education in Andorra. The SAC is aimed at promoting scientific aspects of cultural life, especially outreach activities and research, and by following the criterion that science is creative knowledge-oriented curiosity treated with rigour, displayed clearly and in such a way that it is appealing and understandable to everyone. It was founded in 1983 in response to the new needs of a country in full development and adds its efforts to those of other Andorran cultural entities. Its main objectives are, primarily, the dissemination of knowledge (both fin the fields of science and humanities) and the promotion of research according to the scientific method, all this with the aim of making the scientific knowledge available to the citizen.

The University of Andorra (UdA), founded in 1997, is the public state university of the Principality of Andorra. It has as a basic mission to meet the needs of the Andorran society, not only in those areas regarding higher education but also in relation to research and the transfer of technology and knowledge, each and every one with a high level of quality and adapted to the reality and the dimensions of the country. It is the aim of the UdA to maintain an open attitude, not only to our society, where the University looks for collaboration, and to which it serves, but also to international institutions, with criteria of flexibility and of optimization of resources. The University of Andorra focuses its activities on the student, not only from a scientific point of view but also from a humanist stand, developing creativity, critical analysis and the desire to continue learning autonomously.

The Young Academy of Europe (YAE) has been awarded a grant from the Academia Europaea’s Hubert Curien New Initiatives Fund in May 2015 to conduct a series of video interviews with outstanding academics and researchers, the majority of whom are also members of the Academia Europaea (MAE). Phase I consisted of four interviews filmed in Barcelona between October and December 2015, as well as a further two filmed in Stockholm in December 2015. The interviews were conducted by members of the YAE, and the questions used at the interviews were collected through an open call for questions sent out to all YAE members. The first interviews were made in different relevant locations in Barcelona, with the support of the Barcelona Knowledge Hub of the Academia Europaea (BKH-AE). The project is coordinated by Lynn Kamerlin, YAE, University of Uppsala, and it is inspired by the International Dialogue Project, directed by Anne Buttimer, MAE, University College Dublin, and currently Vice President of the AE.
