Catia Ornelas#
Research fieldI have been working in the design and synthesis of new nanomaterials such as dendrimers and nanoparticles. Due to the possibility to control the structure of these molecules at the nanoscopic level, they can be tailored to be used in a wide range of applications such as catalysis (nano-reactors), sensors and cancer therapeutics. My main interests are to use nanotechnology to develop new well-defined drug delivery systems that will selectively kill cancer cells, minimizing the aggressive side-effects of current cancer treatments.
Nanotechnology is not the future, it is the present!
Short Curriculum Vitae
Cátia Ornelas graduated in Chemistry at University of Madeira, Portugal (in 2003) and earned her PhD degree in Chemistry (in 2007) at the University of Bordeaux/University of Rennes, France, under the supervision of Professor Didier Astruc. After a postdoctoral appointment at the Molecular Design Institute at New York University with Prof. Marcus Weck (2008-2010), she was a postdoctoral fellow at University of California Berkeley, in the group of Prof. Jean M. J. Fréchet (2010-2011). She just moved to the Arizona State University to join the research team at the Center for Bio-Inspired Solar Fuel Production which is an Energy Frontier Research Center sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.
She is the author of more than forty peer-reviewed papers including six in Journal of the American Chemical Society, three in Angewandte Chemie and one in Chemical Reviews. Her interests are in nanochemistry applied to catalysis, cancer therapeutics and renewable energy.
