Members of the European Parliament and health stakeholders have joined forces to call for strengthened leadership in health research#
In an open letter to the European Commission, 48 Members of the European Parliament and health stakeholders call for strengthened leadership to overcome silos and promote cooperation in health research. Academia Europaea endorses this initiative.#
The letter emphasises the value of biomedical research and the need for a more coordinated European approach to health research, a message that has been recently stressed in a statement by the Federation of Europaean Academies of Medicine (FEAM) Board.
The COVID-19 outbreak has evidenced the need for a coordinated response to health challenges based on long-term investments and commitments in public health and health research. The letter proposes that such long term commitment would be better orchestrated by a coordinating body, the European Health Research Council. The letter was an initiative of MEP Dr. Petra de Sutter (GREENS/EFA, Belgium).
