Eugene Garfield receives the Honoris Causa Doctorate at the University of Barcelona#

Barcelona, April 14, 2016.

In the Paranymph of the historical building of the UB (see photo), Eugene Garfield (New York, 1925) will receive the Honoris Causa Doctorate, upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Library and Information Science. Garfield is the foremost authority in the field of scientometrics and bibliometrics. He founded the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI, Philadelphia, 1960) and launched Current Contents (several fields), the Science Citation Index (several fields), the , and the science news magazine The Scientist. Those publications and the activities of the former ISI currently belong to Thomson Reuters, one of the leaders in world-wide scientific information.

This activity counts on the collaboration of the BKH of the Academia Europaea.

“Researching, Educating, Dialoguing. The lessons that we learnt from J.M. Gago (1948-2015)”#

Madrid, June 1-2, 2016.

An International Symposium organised by the Fundación Ramón Areces, in collaboration with the BKH-AE and Ciência Viva (the Portuguese Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture).

This Symposium will pay a tribute to José Mariano Gago on the first anniversary of his death by remembering his work, which was essential to improve the Portuguese university system, and for developming several organisms that have allowed the implementation of programmes of the highest scientific, technological and innovative significance at the EU level. Participating speakers include: Manuel Heitor (Minister of Science of Portugal), Sheldon Glashow (Nobel Prize in Physics 1979), Sierd Cloetingh (AE president), Rosalia Vargas (Ciência Viva president), Andreu Mas-Colell (former minister of Economy of the Generalitat de Catalunya), Enric Banda (former secretary of the ESF), Núria Sebastian (ERC vicepresident), María A. Blasco (CNIO director), Joan J. Guinovart (IUBS president), Teresa Riera (UIBalears) and Salvador Giner (UB).

Girona Seminar on Predictive Catalysis, Centre Cultural La Mercè #

April 17-20, 2016. Chaired by Marcel Swart, YAE, ICREA-University of Girona.

Since 1993, the Girona Seminars have been held every two years in this historic city of Catalonia, with the aim of bringing together young and senior scientists in a beautiful environment and in a friendly atmosphere to discuss the chemistry of everything. The 2016 edition will address Transition-Metal Reactivity by Design, and have front-line plenary and keynote speakers from all over the world. Young researchers opt for poster prizes and talk awards sponsored by Nature Chemistry, RSC Organic Chemistry Frontiers, and Wiley.

On April 17, 2015, J.M. Gago (1948-2015) died in Lisbon, the city where he was born. Gago was former Minister of Science and Technology (1995-2002) and Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education (2005-2011) of Portugal. He played a crucial role in the development of science, technology and innovation, not only in his country but throughout Europe. This video was shown in Lisbon on Nov. 20, 2015, in a symposium on his honour chaired by Manuel Heitor.
